Quick answer: Divide your ad spend by your impressions, then multiply by 1,000. For example, $120 spent for 60,000 impressions is a $2.00 CPM: it cost $2 to show your ad 1,000 times.

How the CPM formula works

CPM stands for cost per mille — “mille” is Latin for thousand. The calculator uses only the numbers you enter, with no hidden averages or platform “benchmarks”.

The formulas

CPM = ad spend ÷ impressions × 1,000
People reached = impressions ÷ average frequency
Cost per 1,000 people = ad spend ÷ people reached × 1,000
Clicks = impressions × CTR
Real cost per click = ad spend ÷ clicks (= CPM ÷ (CTR % × 10))
Break-even CPM = commission × conversion rate × CTR × 1,000
Budget for goal = impression goal ÷ 1,000 × CPM

Break-even CPM is the most you can pay to show your ad 1,000 times without losing money, given how many people click and buy.

CPM vs CPC vs CPA

They are three ways of pricing the same campaign. Ad platforms often charge by impressions even when you care about clicks or sales, so it helps to convert between them:

MetricWhat it measuresBest for judging
CPMCost per 1,000 impressionsHow cheaply you reach people
CPCCost per clickHow cheaply you get visitors
CPACost per sale or leadWhether the campaign makes money

Why a low CPM isn’t always better

Cheap impressions often come from broader audiences who click and buy less. A campaign with a higher CPM can still win if more of its viewers click. That’s why Compare mode judges campaigns by cost per click whenever you enter clicks for both.

Worked examples

1. A first test campaign

$120 of ad spend bought 60,000 impressions: a $2.00 CPM. At that rate, 500,000 impressions would need a $1,000 budget.

2. How many people you reached

With an average frequency of 2.5, those 60,000 impressions reached about 24,000 people. That’s $5.00 per 1,000 people reached — more than the CPM, because each person saw the ad more than once.

3. From CPM to profit

At a 1.5% CTR, 60,000 impressions bring 900 clicks, so each click really costs about $0.13. If 3% of clicks buy at a $20 commission, that’s 27 sales and $540 earned: a $420 profit. Your break-even CPM is $9.00, so you could pay up to $9 per 1,000 impressions before losing money.

4. Cheaper reach, pricier clicks

Campaign A: $120 for 60,000 impressions ($2.00 CPM) and 900 clicks. Campaign B: $120 for 85,000 impressions ($1.41 CPM) and 850 clicks. B shows the ad 25,000 more times, but A’s clicks cost about $0.13 each against B’s $0.14. Campaign A is the better buy for traffic.

Ways to lower your CPM

  • Make ads people engage with. Ad platforms tend to reward ads their users respond to, which can lower what you pay.
  • Test different audiences. Some audiences are more in demand than others. Try a few and compare CPM and cost per click together.
  • Watch your frequency. If the same people see your ad again and again, results often drop. Refresh the creative or widen the audience.
  • Mind the calendar. Busy shopping seasons can bring more advertisers into the same auctions.
  • Judge by cost per click and sale, not CPM alone. Paying a little more for impressions is fine if more viewers click and buy.

Frequently asked questions

What does CPM stand for?

Cost per mille. “Mille” is Latin for thousand, so CPM is the cost to show your ad 1,000 times.

What’s a good CPM for affiliate marketing?

One that’s comfortably below your break-even CPM: commission × conversion rate × CTR × 1,000. CPM varies so much by platform, audience, country and season that any fixed “good” number would be misleading.

How do I convert CPM to CPC?

Divide your CPM by (CTR % × 10). A $2.00 CPM with a 1.5% CTR is $2.00 ÷ 15 = about $0.13 per click.

Is a lower CPM always better?

No. Cheaper impressions often come from audiences that click and buy less. Compare cost per click or cost per sale before deciding.

What’s the difference between impressions and reach?

Impressions count every time the ad was shown. Reach counts how many different people saw it. Reach = impressions ÷ average frequency.

Does the currency selector convert my numbers?

No. It only changes the symbol shown. Enter all your amounts in the currency you choose.
