Quick answer: Add up the monthly price of every AI tool you pay for, dividing yearly plans by 12. That’s your total monthly AI spend; multiply by 12 for the year. For example, three tools at $20, $30 and $49 a month cost $99 a month, or $1,188 a year.

How the AI subscription cost formula works

The calculator turns every plan into a monthly cost and adds them up, using only the numbers you enter — no hidden averages.

The formulas

Monthly cost = price (monthly plan) or price ÷ 12 (yearly plan)
Total per month = sum of every tool's monthly cost
Total per year = total per month × 12
Average per tool = total per month ÷ number of paid tools
Share of revenue = total per month ÷ monthly revenue × 100
Possible savings = sum of monthly costs for tools marked "No"

Tools with a price of 0 are not counted as paid tools.

Why AI costs creep up

Each tool looks cheap on its own, so it’s easy to say yes to one more. Free trials quietly turn into paid plans, yearly plans renew without warning, and a tool you tried for one project keeps charging for months. Listing everything in one place is often the first time you see the real total.

Monthly or yearly billing?

Yearly plans are often cheaper per month, but you pay for the whole year up front, even if you stop using the tool after two months. Switch to yearly only for tools you’ve used every week for at least a few months.

Where to find your own numbers

Your total is only as complete as the list you enter, so check each of these before you rely on it:

Worked examples

1. A solo creator

A chat assistant at $20, a design tool at $15 and a grammar tool at $12 a month. Total: $47 a month, or $564 a year, an average of $15.67 per tool.

2. An AI-heavy review site

Eight tools at $20, $20, $49, $99, $30, $15, $29 and $39 a month add up to $301 a month ($3,612 a year). With $3,000 a month in revenue, AI tools take 10% of income.

3. Mixing yearly and monthly plans

One tool on a $500 yearly plan is $500 ÷ 12 = $41.67 a month. Add a $20 monthly tool and the total is $61.67 a month, or $740 a year.

4. A subscription clean-up

A creator paying $186 a month marks three tools as unused: $20, $29 and $15. Cancelling them saves $64 a month, or $768 a year.

Five ways to cut your AI tool costs

Every tool you drop or downgrade comes straight off your monthly bill. Start with the biggest bars in your results:

  • Cancel what you haven’t opened in 30 days. Mark those tools “No” above to see exactly what you’d save.
  • Remove overlap. If two tools do the same job, such as writing or image creation, keep the one you use most.
  • Downgrade plans. Many tools have a cheaper tier that covers what a solo creator actually needs.
  • Go yearly only on proven tools. Save on the tools you use every week, and stay monthly on everything else.
  • Review every three months. Set a reminder to re-run this calculator, so new trials don’t pile up.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend on AI tools each month?

There’s no fixed rule. A useful check is the share of revenue: if AI tools take a large slice of what you earn, look at which tools actually help you make money and cut the rest. If you’re not earning yet, keep to the few tools you use every day.

How does the calculator handle yearly plans?

Enter the full yearly price and choose “Yearly”. The calculator divides it by 12 so it can be added to your monthly tools.

Should I include free tools?

You can, with a price of 0, to keep your list complete. Free tools aren’t counted in the number of paid tools or the average cost.

What counts as revenue for the percentage?

Everything your online business earns in an average month: affiliate commissions, product sales, ad income and client work. Use the same currency as your tool prices.

What if I pay for extra team seats?

Enter the total price you pay for that tool, including every seat, as one row.

Does the currency selector convert my numbers?

No. It only changes the symbol shown. Enter all your amounts in the currency you choose.
