Quick answer: Divide your income goal by what you actually keep per sale (commission minus refunds) to get sales needed per month. Divide that by your click-to-sale conversion rate to get link clicks needed, and divide again by your click-through rate to get visitors needed. For example, a $1,000 goal at $28.50 net per sale needs about 36 sales a month.

How the affiliate income goal formula works

The calculator works backwards from your goal, one step at a time. It uses only the numbers you enter — no hidden industry averages.

The formulas

Net per sale = commission per sale × (1 − refund rate)
Commission needed = income goal + monthly costs
Sales per month = commission needed ÷ net per sale
Link clicks per month = sales ÷ click-to-sale conversion rate
Visitors per month = link clicks ÷ visitor click-through rate

Weekly figures use 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks per month. Daily figures use 365 ÷ 12 = 30.4 days per month. Sales are rounded up, because you can’t make part of a sale.

Why the calculator splits traffic into two steps

Most affiliate sites send visitors to an article, and only some of them click through to the merchant. Of those clicks, only some buy. Treating these as two separate rates shows you where your funnel leaks: a low click-through rate is a content problem you can fix on your own site, while a low conversion rate usually points to the offer or the merchant’s sales page.

Where to find your own numbers

Example values are only placeholders. Your plan is only as good as the numbers you put in, so use real data as soon as you have it:

InputWhere to find itTip
Commission per saleThe offer’s affiliate page or your network dashboard (JVZoo, ClickBank, Impact, Amazon Associates)If you promote several products, use the average of what you actually earned per sale last month.
Refund rateYour network’s sales or transactions reportRefunds ÷ total sales. Digital products with generous guarantees can have higher refunds.
Visitor click-through rateGoogle Analytics (page views) plus your link-tracking plugin’s click count, such as Pretty Links or ThirstyAffiliatesMeasure it per page. Reviews and comparisons usually behave very differently from general guides.
Click-to-sale conversionYour affiliate dashboard: sales ÷ clicks (sometimes called EPC or conversion rate)Use at least a month of data. A handful of clicks can make this number swing wildly.

Brand new and no data yet? Run the calculator with a cautious guess, then replace each number after your first month of real traffic.

Worked examples

1. A simple starter goal

Goal $500 a month, $25 commission, no refunds: $500 ÷ $25 = 20 sales a month — about 4.6 a week, or one sale every day and a half.

2. Allowing for refunds

Goal $1,000, $50 commission, 10% refund rate. Net per sale is $50 × 0.90 = $45, so you need $1,000 ÷ $45 = 22.2, rounded up to 23 sales a month. Ignoring refunds would have told you 20.

3. Turning sales into traffic

Same 22.2 sales, with 2% of clicks converting: 22.2 ÷ 0.02 = 1,112 link clicks. If 5% of visitors click your links: 1,111 ÷ 0.05 = 22,223 visitors a month, or about 731 a day.

4. A profit goal with costs

You want $1,000 profit and spend $100 a month on hosting and tools. Commission needed is $1,100. At $45 net per sale: $1,100 ÷ $45 = 24.4, rounded up to 25 sales a month.

Five ways to reach your goal with less traffic

Every input multiplies the others, so improving any one of them by the same percentage cuts the traffic you need by the same amount. Doubling your commission per sale halves your required visitors — and so does doubling your click-through rate. Pick the lever that’s cheapest for you to move:

Frequently asked questions

How many affiliate sales do I need to make $1,000 a month?

Divide $1,000 by what you keep per sale. At $50 commission with no refunds, that’s 20 sales. At $20 it’s 50 sales. At $10 it’s 100 sales. Enter your own commission and refund rate above for an exact figure.

How much traffic do I need for affiliate marketing income?

It depends on two rates: how many visitors click your affiliate links, and how many of those clicks buy. Visitors needed = sales needed ÷ conversion rate ÷ click-through rate. Use your own analytics and affiliate dashboard numbers, as these rates vary widely between sites, niches and pages.

What conversion rate should I use if I’m just starting?

There’s no single reliable average, because it varies by niche, offer and traffic source. Start with a cautious guess, then replace it with your own sales ÷ clicks after a month of real data.

Should I include refunds?

Yes. Refunded sales usually lose their commission, so ignoring refunds makes your goal look easier than it is. Use the refund rate from your network’s reports.

Does the currency selector convert my numbers?

No. It only changes the symbol shown. Enter every amount in the same currency.

Does this work for recurring commissions?

For a rough plan, enter one month’s recurring commission as your commission per sale. Bear in mind recurring income builds up over time as customers stay subscribed, so your required new sales fall as your customer base grows.
