Quick answer: From your Etsy sales, take off the $0.20 listing renewal per sale, the 6.5% transaction fee, payment processing (3% + $0.25 in the US) and Offsite Ads on the orders they bring in. What’s left is your take-home profit. For example, 100 sales of a $10 download, with 20% of orders from Offsite Ads at 15%, leaves about $830 a month.

How the Etsy profit formula works

The calculator takes each Etsy fee off your sales in turn, using only the numbers you enter — no hidden averages.

The formulas

Sales after discount = price × (1 − discount) × sales per month
Listing renewals = sales × listing fee
Transaction fees = sales after discount × transaction fee %
Processing = sales after discount × processing % + sales × fixed fee
Offsite Ads = ad orders × (sale price × ads fee %), max $100 per order
Profit = sales after discount − all fees − other costs − fixed costs

Ad orders = sales × share of orders from Offsite Ads. Break-even sales are rounded up.

Etsy changes its fees from time to time, so check Etsy’s fee page or your Shop Manager before relying on any preset.

How Offsite Ads change your profit

Offsite Ads only cost you when a buyer clicks one of Etsy’s ads on Google, Facebook or elsewhere and then buys. On those orders, the ad fee stacks on top of every other fee, so a $10 download can lose about 29% of its price instead of 14%. The “Profit without Offsite Ads” card shows what you’d keep if you opted out. Opting out is only possible while your shop is under $10,000 in yearly sales.

Why very cheap downloads barely pay

The $0.20 listing renewal and $0.25 processing fee are the same on every sale. On a $10 download they take 4.5%. On a $2.50 download they take 18%, before the percentage fees. Bundling small files into one higher-priced pack keeps much more of each sale.

Worked examples

1. A printable wall art shop

150 sales of a $7.50 print = $1,125. Take off listing renewals ($30), transaction fees ($73.13), processing ($71.25) and Offsite Ads on 20% of orders at 15% ($33.75). Take-home: $916.88 a month, an 81.5% margin.

2. A Notion template, ads switched off

40 sales of a $29 template = $1,160, opted out of Offsite Ads. Take off listing renewals ($8), transaction fees ($75.40) and processing ($44.80). Take-home: $1,031.80 a month, an 88.9% margin.

3. An established shop with required ads

300 sales of a $12 planner = $3,600. Take off listing renewals ($60), transaction fees ($234), processing ($183) and 12% Offsite Ads on 60 orders ($86.40). Take-home: $3,036.60 a month, an 84.4% margin.

4. A cheap SVG pack

200 sales at $2.50 = $500. Take off listing renewals ($40), transaction fees ($32.50), processing ($65) and Offsite Ads on 40 orders ($15). Take-home: $347.50 a month, only a 69.5% margin, because the flat fees hit cheap items hardest.

Five ways to keep more of every Etsy sale

Every fee comes out of the same sale, so cutting any one of them raises your profit without needing more buyers. Pick the lever that’s easiest for you to move:

  • Bundle cheap files. One $9 bundle pays the flat fees once instead of three times on three $3 files.
  • Price with Offsite Ads in mind. If you can’t opt out, set prices so ad orders still leave a healthy profit.
  • Go easy on discounts. A 20% sale cuts your profit by far more than 20%, because the fixed fees stay the same.
  • Cross-sell your own store. Add a link in your download file to more products on a self-hosted shop with lower fees.
  • Cut unused subscriptions. Fixed tools add up fast when sales are low, so keep only what earns its place.

Frequently asked questions

Does Etsy charge the $0.20 listing fee on every sale?

Yes, if your listing is set to auto-renew. Each sale renews the listing for $0.20, and each extra quantity sold in an order renews it again.

Can I opt out of Etsy Offsite Ads?

Only while your shop has made under $10,000 in the past 12 months. Once you pass $10,000, Offsite Ads are required at a 12% fee.

Is there a cap on the Offsite Ads fee?

Yes. The fee is capped at $100 per order, so it only matters for very expensive items. The calculator applies this cap automatically.

Are payment processing fees the same in every country?

No. They depend on where your bank account is. US sellers pay 3% + $0.25 per order; other countries differ. Check the Etsy Payments page for your country and enter your rate.

Does this include Etsy Ads (onsite ads)?

No. Etsy Ads is a separate daily budget you choose. Add your monthly Etsy Ads spend to “Monthly fixed costs” to include it.

Does the currency selector convert my numbers?

No. It only changes the symbol shown. Enter all your amounts in the currency you choose.
